They used to report directly to Edhi. The responsibility has now fallen on Faisal Edhi who is also the acting chairman.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY

Edhi Foundation was established in 1951 by Abdul Sattar Edhi. It is Pakistan’s largest charitable organization. Abdul Sattar Edhi is also known as the ‘Angel of Mercy’ due to his devotion towards this organization. He set up an excellent example of selflessness for whole Pakistan. This organization was started in Karachi as a small dispensary in a slum. He set up his first welfare center in 1957 and then established the Edhi Trust. A decade later it was converted into an ambulance by Edhi. Edhi took this great initiative in time when such philanthropic services were absent, that is why it gained huge popularity within few years of its startup. It provided great services of social welfare both privately and publicly in Karachi, especially in its low-income areas. Its increasing popularity and credibility proved to be extremely useful for the inflow of donations which then helped in its expansion. In the time period of 1980s and 1990s, the work of this great social welfare was changed from an ambulance to orphanages, old homes, homes for homeless. These services then rapidly expanded throughout the country.

Today there are a total of 335 Edhi centers throughout Pakistan working efficiently for the social welfare of people. Edhi hopes that Pakistan will become a welfare state through this organization as it has set up an excellent example for everyone. On 25 June, 2013, his kidneys failed, and doctors announced that he will be on dialysis until he finds a kidney donor. Three years later he died due to kidney failure at the age of 88. He was on the ventilator and his last wishes were to donate his organs to the needy persons. His health was so poor that his organs had failed and only his corneas could be
donated. Abdul Sattar Edhi spent around 45 years of his life in the service of humanity. He has established a national welfare network, the Edhi Foundation (EF), which will always be remembered as the most wonderful effort by him. The working of its central office is very simple and amazing. It provides nation-wide services which are coordinated by Edhi personally with the help of telephones and a handful of efficient and active assistants and volunteers. It would have been not easy to manage such a mixture of operations and use of administrative communication channels with the limited staff. This has inevitably resulted in the centralization of policy decisions.

Edhi foundation is totally a volunteers based organisation. It is run by people who voluntarily wanted to be a part of it. There are around six thousand volunteer. These includes heads of every zone, workers at several Edhi Homes and centers, clerks at Edhi Centers, workers at maternity homes and ambulance drivers. The organization gets financial support from the donations of many people. Individuals donate voluntarily ranging from Rs. 5 to many hundreds of thousands of rupees which supports the foundation’s activities. Foundation's main emphasis is on individuals and social masses contribution for the organization.

Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre: A Beacon of Hope

 Introduction:

The Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) in Lahore, Pakistan, is a cutting-edge cancer centre. The Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust is a charity organization founded under Pakistan's Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. Imran Khan, the Pakistani cricket legend and current Prime Minister is the founder of the organization.

It is estimated that around 150,000 cancer cases are diagnosed in Pakistan each year. The inspiration to form the hospital started after Imran Khan’s mother, Mrs. Shaukat Khanum succumbed to cancer. There was no specialized cancer hospital with extensive treatment in Pakistan at that time. Cancer was considered as hopeless disease and poor people couldn’t afford the treatment. In Pakistan poor people couldn’t even get the access to basic health facilities. He witnessed the conditions of cancer patients in the hospitals of Pakistan. Imran Khan realized the need for the specialized cancer hospital that would help to cure the cancer and also help the poor and needy people who couldn’t afford this treatment. Hence, Imran Khan started working to pursue his dream of building up a specialized cancer hospital for the people of Pakistan, regardless of their ability to pay.

Imran Khan decided to create a tertiary care cancer hospital in Lahore, Pakistan, named after his mother, the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre.

Fundraising:

The hospital concept was based entirely on donations, because no government involvement was allowed to avoid bureaucratic or political influence, the hospital idea was fully funded via contributions. Imran Khan intended to establish a charity that would provide free cancer treatment to impoverished individuals regardless of their financial situation. So, Imran Khan started a donation campaign in order to build the hospital.

At the beginning only a little amount of money was raised, but Imran Khan stayed firm and modified the fundraising strategy for the hospital. He next turned to youngsters, founding the fundraising squad "Imran's Tigers." When the Tigers collected donations from motorists at traffic signals and went door to door to collect funds, they created history. They not only secured sufficient funds to construct the institution, but they also aroused public awareness about the need for the country's first cancer hospital. Imran Khan issued a nationwide appeal to collect cash from a match between Pakistan and India held at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore where he raised Rs. 2,902,600. Following it, more than 50 successful fund raisers were organized all around the world. Imran's captaincy led Pakistan to victory in the 1992 cricket world cup in Melbourne, which aided fundraising efforts. He was able to earn £1.55 million in just six weeks following the World Cup, when the same sum had taken him two years previously. He gave the project his whole award money of 85,000 pounds. After that Imran Khan and team has raised enough money to make his dream a reality.

The positive response of the Pakistani population, both within and beyond Pakistan, was both surprising and uplifting, thanks in no little part to Imran Khan's reputation and star status. Imran worked relentlessly to raise cash both in the United States and internationally, and people eagerly reacted. With publicity campaigns and fundraisers, these donations have remained and even expanded over the years.

Building SKMCH:

Dr. Nausherwan K. Burki MB, PhD, FRCP, FCPS, designed the Master Plan for the Hospital in 1990. Graham Rapp of Arrasmith, Judd & Rapp, Architects in Health Planning, USA, designed the hospital, which he managed. Nayyar Ali Dada & Associates of Lahore were in charge of the design details on site. Messrs. Progressive Consultants, Lahore, did the local engineering. The hospital's foundation was laid in April 1991, and was opened on December 29, 1994. Dr. Burki served as the hospital's first CEO until September 1996, when he took a sabbatical leave from his university.

The master plan for SKMCH was created by a group of professionals. They designed an excellent road map of SKMCH. The master plan was divided into three parts, with the first phase beginning with 60 inpatient beds and all auxiliary services, and the second phase ending with 250 inpatient beds by the end of ten years. In the end, the timeframe was excessively ambitious, and the phases took 20 years to complete instead of the projected 10. The hospital was constructed in accordance with the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards and hospital construction rules in the United States.

Shaukat Khanum has a presence in more than 65 cities across Pakistan through hospitals, diagnostic centers, walk-in clinics (cancer screening centers), and laboratory collection locations. Shaukat Khanum, Lahore has examined over 75% of cancer patients for free. In 2017–2018, 72 percent of patients were treated completely free of charge at the hospital. A further 13% received therapy that was just partially free. Only 15% of patients were responsible for the entire treatment expense. The Lahore hospital sees over 700 outpatients every day. On a daily basis, about 130 patients get chemotherapy. Shaukat Khanum's yearly budget is R.s 28 billion, according to figures from 2022. This year, 210,667 outpatient visits were recorded. A total of 14,840 patients have been hospitalized.

Shaukat Khanum collect funds for patients from donations. Revenue generated from Shaukat Khanum’s diagnostic services are mostly use for the expansion projects. So, in order to treat cancer patients who cannot afford expensive treatment, Shaukat khanum have devised multiple ways to collect fund for cancer patients who are unable to afford the treatment. SKMCH & RC collect funds through SMS donations, Organizing fundraising and networking events ,Corporate sponsorships and collaborations, Sponsor a cancer patient, Sponsorship of equipment, Zakat. Moreover, SKMCH launch different campaigns to generate funds.

The establishment of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Center in Lahore has had a significant influence on Pakistan, not only in terms of clinical cancer care, but also in terms of hospital management, nursing, pharmacy services, and overall health management. Another hospital has been started in Karachi.

Shaukat Khanum has been saving lives of people for many years. The supporters and well wishers of SKMCH & RC are the driving force that led this organization to be successful.

Pakistan Railways (PR)

 PAKISTAN RAILWAYS HISTORY

It all began In 1855, during the British Raj when several railway companies started laying local rail tracks in several districts of Sindh and Punjab. So, it can be said that the country’s rail system started as a patchwork of local rail lines, constructed and operated by small-scale, private railway companies of that time, which include the Scinde Railway, Punjab Railway, Delhi Railway, and Indus Flotilla. However, most of these companies merged and formed the North Western State Railway in the year 1880.

However, up till 1947, the year of independence, the network of the North-Western State Railway expanded throughout Sindh and Punjab. After the independence, around 8,122 kilometres (5,047 miles) of train tracks of the North-Western State Railway came under Pakistani territories. Initially, the system of railways in Pakistan was totally based on narrow-gauge train tracks. The process of the conversion of these narrow-gauge railway tracks into broad gauge railway tracks has been carried out from time to time throughout the history of railways in Pakistan.

Some of the many large-scale extension projects on the country’s railway system were carried out from the 1950s to the 1980s. As of now, all of the narrow-gauge railway tracks have either been dismantled or converted into broad-gauge railway tracks for a smoother flow of railways traffic in Pakistan. The history of railways in Pakistan has been preserved and put on display in the railway museums found in different cities across the country.

Quick Fact: A narrow-gauge railway track is narrower and thinner than the standard track gauge, measuring at least 1,435 mm. British narrow-gauge railway ran miles and miles around the landscape of South Asia. However, these days the most significant use of the narrow gauge railway track is in the commercial industry, specifically for temporary arrangements since such types of railway tracks are cost-effective and short-lived.

Update (Jan 24, 2022): In a recent development, the Railway Minister of Pakistan Azam Swati has introduced the Scrapyard Management System. As the name suggests, this state-of-the-art system will use the latest technologies to digitally manage railway scrapyards in the country.

The newly launched Scrap Management System will be linked with the Google Productivity and Collaboration Suite, which has been simultaneously introduced and integrated into the system of the national railway company. This all-new digital platform is envisaged to enhance the collaboration and productivity of the concerned railway staff members.

According to the official details released, the cloud-based scrapyard management system has been designed to digitise scrapyard assets. It will streamline the entire inventory management process, promoting the concept of transparency among the concerned departments of Pakistan Railways.

A system powered by the advanced Google Productivity and Collaboration Suite will also improve the efficiency of the overall functioning of the railway company by allowing workers to easily communicate with each other while working remotely in far-off locations.

Update (Jan. 13, 2022): The transportation of temperature-sensitive products via trucks and other heavy vehicles is not only costly but also harmful to the environment. These are the two main reasons why Pakistan Railways (PR) has recently introduced the concept of reefer freight trains in Pakistan in collaboration with the Marine Group of Companies. It’s a groundbreaking initiative in the history of the national logistics and cargo infrastructure.

“On average, railroads are three to four times more fuel-efficient than trucks,” according to the PR official statement. It also mentioned that using cold-chain trains instead of relying on heavy-duty diesel-powered vehicles could not only cut down greenhouse gas emissions but also significantly reduce the cargo delivery time.

As of now, this newly opened freight train service in Pakistan operates with only one train a week. PR is aiming to expand the operations to at least 12 trains a month in the near future. Moreover, in a recent development, the first-ever refrigerated freight train of Pakistan successfully completed its journey from the dry port of Marine International Container Terminal in Prem Nagar-Lahore, all the way to Wazir Mansion railway station on Mauripur Road in Karachi.

Update (Dec. 8, 2021): Pakistan Railway has recently made necessary arrangements for the revival of a special train service based on steam locomotives for tourism purposes. The steam train operation already kicked off on December 3, 2021, and would run up till December 10, 2021.

The journey of this special train covers a rail route from Rawalpindi to Attock Khurd, and then all the way to Nowshera. It would pass through many different stations on the way to its destination.

During this train trip, relevant information about the region’s railway history would be provided to a group of 35 onboard tourists, photographers, train lovers, and adventure-seekers belonging to different countries around the world, such as the UK, USA, Australia, France, Spain, and Germany.

Update (July 5, 2021): Pakistan Railways, which is a state-owned railway company, has recently launched a brand-new tourist train service in Balochistan in order to promote tourism in the region. The new train service was inaugurated on July 3, 2021, by top railway officials.

According to the latest news reports, this newly-launched tourist train in Balochistan will operate two days a week, usually every Saturday and Sunday. Since it is a state-owned service, fares have been kept low to make it easily accessible by the masses.

The city of Quetta among many popular railway stations in Balochistan like Kuchlak, Bostan, Baleli, Spezand Sariab, and Kolpur will be the major stops of this tourist train service. Meanwhile, if you want to learn more about Pakistan Railways and its key services, continue reading this post.

Update (March 1, 2021): Pakistan Railways is resuming the operations of trilateral container trains from March 4, 2021. The Pak-Iran-Turkey container train service was initially launched back in 2009 with a fleet of eight trains. But, due to security reasons, this trans-country railway service was shut down soon after its launch.

A statement recently released by the Pakistan Railways Headquarters has confirmed the relaunch of the freight train, which will begin its journey from Istanbul in Turkey on March 4. Once operational, this cargo train service will connect Pakistan with Iran and Turkey via an immensely long rail route that stretches 6,566 km.

To reach Tehran from Islamabad, the container train has to cover a distance of around 2000 km from where it will continue its journey to Istanbul. This trans-country freight train route is also expected to geographically benefit the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which is one of the most significant parts of China’s Belt Road Initiative (BRI). It will be linked with Pakistan’s ML-1 railway line, which is one of the multi-billion dollar CPEC projects in the country.

Based on a vast network of train tracks, tunnels, junctions, and dry ports, Pakistan Railways is one of the largest and oldest railway systems in the world. It is a state-owned railway company, which caters to the passenger as well as freight transportation throughout the country and connects all major cities like the network of motorways in Pakistan.

Shaukat Khanam Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center

Introduction:

The Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) in Lahore, Pakistan, is a cutting-edge cancer centre. The Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust is a charity organisation founded under Pakistan's Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. Imran Khan, the Pakistani cricket legend and current Prime Minister is the founder of the organisation. Mrs. Shaukat Khanum, his mother, died of cancer, which inspired him to build the hospital. Despite having highly skilled physicians and surgeons, Pakistan had no structured focus on cancer patients until the early 1990s. Cancer treatment was administered in the general wards of general hospitals by non-specialist physicians and surgeons due to a lack of diagnostic tools and the use of relatively few conventional chemotherapy medicines. A tragic event introduced Imran Khan on the cancer scene in this vacuum. Imran was an international cricketing star in 1990, having captained both the Oxford University and Pakistan cricket teams; in the same year, his mother died of cancer, and he was shocked by the absence of competent medical care in the country against cancer. Imran decided to create a tertiary care cancer hospital in Lahore, Pakistan, named after his mother, the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, as a model for Pakistan in that year. It was a difficult effort to create a master plan for a tertiary care, state-of-the-art cancer centre in a developing country. In 1990, there were no credible statistics on cancer incidence in Pakistan, no principles of contemporary hospital administration existed, nursing education had not kept up with modern trends, and there was a major lack of educated secondary health personnel. In 1990, there was no MRI machine in the region; medical radioisotopes and blood products were generally not available. So Imran Khan and his team has faced many difficulties initially.

So Imran Khan started a donation campaign in order to build the hospital. SKMH Making:

Dr. Nausherwan K. Burki MB, PhD, FRCP, FCPS, designed the Master Plan for the Hospital in 1990. Graham Rapp of Arrasmith, Judd & Rapp, Architects in Health Planning, USA, designed the hospital, which he managed. Dr. Burki served as the hospital's first CEO until September 1996, when he took a sabbatical leave from his university. He was in charge of hiring all of the consultant/attending medical personnel as well as senior nursing staff.

The master plan for SKMH was created by a group of professionals. They designed An excellent road map of SKMH.

The establishment of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Center in Lahore has had a significant influence on Pakistan, not only in terms of clinical cancer care, but also in terms of hospital management, nursing, pharmacy services, and overall health management. Regional health care organizations have dispatched observers to the hospital and have adopted our hospital systems. Nurses and pharmacists from these and other hospitals rotate through the SKMH and then return to their respective institutions to put what they've learned into practice. On April 20, 2018, the Joint Commission awarded the hospital accreditation. It's been a long road, and it's still going on. A new hospital with 250 beds was built in 2015 in response to the large number of patients travelling from the north of the nation and Afghanistan. And now another hospital has been started in Karachi.

It aims to put Karachi on the entrepreneurial map of the world. IBA has a 10 year collaborative partnership with Babson College in Boston which is the top most entrepreneurship institute in USA.

According to Time’s Educations, IBA was ranked among the top 600 Asian universities. Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi has established itself as the leading business institute of Pakistan. After putting your efforts for 13 years, one does deserve a healthy campus life where he can find new learning opportunities and feel like home every passing day, and where he can find friends like a family who can be their support system. We believe IBA is well known for providing quality campus life to its students. You may hear people talking about a lot of stuff not good at IBA, but you will hardly find anyone who will not be satisfied with IBA’s campus life.
