Misogyny: Cases of Domestic Violence

 Syeda Mahnoor Ali (Bs-6th, GPP)

Pakistan has been ranked 153rd out of 156 nations by the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap 2021 index. This is quite an alarming situation. This rank also brings attention towards the increasing violence against women in Pakistan. Unfortunately, violence against women has become so normal that we are accustomed to hearing a different horrifying story on social media every other day, yet the story along with the victim is long forgotten after a new trending case emerges. Hence, we are being unable to recognize the horrifying impact it inflicts on society which also raises a finger at the state for its incapability or interest in protecting women.

According to the report “Tracking Numbers: State of Violence Against Women and Children in Pakistan” published by Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO), the statistics were quite horrific. The report basically compares the number of cases reported to the police and cases reported by the media. There exists a huge difference between the two. According to the report, in the last six months 24, 013 cases have been reported when it comes to violence against women. The report is set on different indicates which include rape, kidnapping, honor killings, domestic violence etc.

Keghad Baloch, a woman roughly in her early 50’s, who was allegedly tortured and murdered by security forces in Kech, in Pakistan’s insurgency-ridden province Baluchistan convinced us that violence against women was initially considered a horrifying consequence of lack of education, widespread misogyny or poverty in a patriarchal society such as Pakistan. However, we were forced to reconsider these stances after the alarming cases of Noor Mukkadam, the 27-year-old daughter of Pakistan’s ex-ambassador to South Korea and Kazakhstan, at the hands of Zahir Jaffer, son of a business tycoon, in the capital city of Islamabad. Another case was of Tehmina Durrani, who accused her ex-husband Mustafa Khar for domestic abuse in an autobiography book she published in 1991, ‘My Feudal Lord’. All these cases indicate that this evil is found in all social classes of Pakistan.

Domestic violence is one of the major indicators of violence against women. Approximately 5000 women are killed every year from domestic violence, with many others mutilated or disabled. Women have reported assaults ranging from physical, psychological and sexual abuse from spouses. According to the statistics, there have been 325 cases of domestic violence in Punjab from 1st January to 30th June 2021, whereas media has reported only 158 cases which means that many cases are not highlighted by the media.

Something that unexpectedly hit me was that families wait all year long for holidays to spend quality time together and pandemic had given them that chance. However, violence statistics showed a rampant increase during this time. The cases specify the deep-rooted issues of intolerance and frustration in the societies.

Mariam, a woman in her 30’s is a house-help, working in 3 different houses to earn money for her children while her husband; almost 70 sits idly at home offering no financial assistance. Instead, he physically and verbally abuses her. Another horrifying story surfaced earlier of Saima Ali, a 23-year-old girl who was badly injured along with her brother. Their mother was shot by their father in Peshawar. Another case of domestic violence was of Qurat-ul-Ain Baloch, a mother of four, was allegedly tortured and murdered by her husband in Hyderabad in Pakistan’s Sindh province. We get to see news like these on a daily basis on the media. However, we are not even sure how many cases are still unreported.

To cater the urgency of the situation, a gender protection unit has been inaugurated in Islamabad for women to file their complaints against their abusers whether through the helpline 8090 or by walk-in. Most cases have been recorded regarding domestic violence, according to the GPU. This unit is a great initiative to motivate and encourage women to speak up against violence, knowing the fact that their complaints will be addressed, the complainants will be protected and the culprits will be held accountable.

While referring to the Gender Protection Unit, Syed Kausar Abbas, the Executive Director of Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO) stated; ‘’This unit has been really efficient in building the confidence of victims; women and other marginalized communities to file their complaints on the helpline 8090 as Islamabad policy has been working effectively and can be described as a public friendly police’’.

Pakistan’s parliament passed the Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Bill, 2021 in order to institutionalize measures that would conveniently provide essential precautions for protecting and preventing all sorts of domestic violence against women and children. In July, the advisor to Prime Minister of Pakistan on Parliamentary Affairs, Babar Awan wrote a letter to the speaker of the National Assembly asking for the review of the passed bill against domestic violence as he claimed it to be to broad and said that it should be sent to the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII).

Gastrodiplomacy: opportunity for economic well-being

History, being a great testament, has shown how the tools of diplomacy have evolved from the Greeks era to the present 21st-century nation-state system. Diplomacy, a soft tool, was/ is used as a tool to mitigate the bellicosity, if it exists, between the states and move them closer to each other, in a short period. With the advent of globalization- the interconnectedness of states-, gastro diplomacy has occupied a new place in the field of diplomacy. In it, food is being used as a tool to achieve diplomatic goals, depending upon state interests. This importance of food can be judged by Savarin (2014); “Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are. For a country to display itself on the strength of food, it requires a national cuisine upon which to establish itself”. Food, an essential element for human existence, continuously has/ is playing a profound role in international affairs.

Gastro diplomacy, like cultural diplomacy and soft power, is presented through tourism, being catalyzed by the diaspora or the expatriates of state, residing abroad. Tourism plays a vital role for many states, especially the rich south Asian states due to their rich spices history, for the diffusion of gastro diplomacy, consequently helping the state heath economically and financially. Among these states, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia extract a large proportion of their GDP from their tourism industry.  E.g. Thailand, being famous for Thai food, attract a large proportion of people from all around the globe. As a result, it not only burgeon the economy but also heals the identity of any state, who so is going through a turmoil situation e.g. Pakistan.

Pakistan, since its inception, being hit from all dimensions (political and economic) has left it unstable and its economy in a stagnant position. However, it is this food that can polish the spoiled picture and present it positively, before the world community. Therefore Pakistan, being a multi-lingual and multi-cultural society, can avail this opportunity and present a positive side of it. The multi-ethnic and multicultural society can produce a plethora variety of culture-based food. Therefore, this food can be used as a catalyst for public diplomacy.eg Peshawar, the capital of KPK, attracts the bulk of people from inside and out of Pakistan just for a special dish, known as Dam pokh. As a result, Peshawar has become a spot for tourists. These tourist not only fulfill the basic necessities of people, but, rather it also improve the wrong image that was constructed, through media, during the time of Global war on terror.

Youth engagement and empowerment for inclusive and sustainable development

Youth plays a pivotal role in any nation's progress and development. Therefore it is imperative for all national organizations to work for youth engagement and empower young people to enhance their contribution to national development. Any organization can achieve this goal of youth engagement and empowerment in partnership with young people, the government, and other vital key stakeholders. This ambition should be embodied in a rights-based approach, that should focus on the realities faced by young people in their respective communities and their consideration as a force for peace, democracy, equality, and good governance. The youth should be taken as a catalyst for international consensus building and an essential resource for poverty eradication and the sustainable development of any nation.

While working on youth or let's say with the youth we should understand the social context in which we desire to work for change. Young people living in any part of the world or in any society have certain roles and responsibilities. There is no doubt in the fact that these particular responsibilities and roles differ according to each society or social context. There are certain particular aspects that are common across most societies. This idea gives rise to certain questions like from a sociological perspective how can we see young people in various societies. There is a range of concepts or definitions of "youth, "adolescence" and "family". Furthermore, there are numerous problems and issues faced by young people living in different societies or communities. It is imperative to properly understand the social conditions of young people living in different societies.  Researchers and subject experts in the area have opined regarding youth in different social contexts along with general theories regarding society.

Youth development workers across the world try to help the youth in order to improve young people's conditions. In doing so they will ultimately be helping in the reformation and development of the society in which they live. Institutions and youth development workers should adopt some ways of seeing young people in their society. As the young is considered as an agent of change so, in order to work with young people for the development of any nation, there is always a lurking need and commonsense understanding of this vital group. A critical part of this understanding would be how to make them fit into their society, community, and family.

There are certain challenges that all of us have to come across such as the way young people are perceived and the definition of the term "youth". This term is not defined in a similar manner in all societies and cultures. "Society" and  "Culture" need to be examined before understanding the term "youth". According to social theorists, there are three ways in which societies form and people's behavior. These three approaches (functionalism, conflict theory, and interactionist approach) could prove to help in our understanding of young people and how to work with them for societal development.

It is an acknowledged fact that Youth do not exist in isolation, They are very much part of their respective society and culture. In reality, the youth of any nation is defined and explained by the culture and society. Young people can take initiative, as you must have heard many people in their talks that they would have killed themselves two hundred times at a young age. Not simply out of this fact that you could do what others can not do, it is at times stretching yourself beyond the limits. Youth without any sense of adventure is not youth. Now the question arises what is that adventure? Many youngsters mindlessly get into adventurous sports thus losing their life. As young people, you can have ventures/adventures in your life. That is absolutely up to you as young people living in any society. As somebody has very rightly said that adventure means you are unaware of the fact that where your next foot is going to be. That means there is danger. There is no adventure when everything is safe and calm, it is a venture. In adventure, you step into something that you do not know.

Youth should be involved in such a way that they should feel the adventure but there should be a plan at the back to engage them in responsible and challenging actions to create positive change. This calls for young people's involvement in planning and decision-making so that they could learn the best that is thought and known in this world.
